Do Personalised Number Plates Affect My Insurance?

Is a car still insured if you change the number plate?

By law in the UK, every driver must obtain vehicle insurance to be able to drive on the road. Lots of things can make the cost of insurance increase; however, having a private registration plate on your car will not affect the price of your insurance policy.

When you assign a private plate to your vehicle, you must let your insurance company know. Failure to do this will void your policy.

Although a personalised plate isn't classed as a modification to your car and doesn't typically impact your insurance premiums, you may be required to pay an admin fee for updating your policy.

You may find that your insurance company wants to increase the cost of your cover due to adding a private number plate to your car. This is usually based on the logic that the cost of the number plate increases the value of your vehicle, making it more desirable, meaning it could be more of a target to theft.

If this is the case - it could be worth challenging the fee as the modification is not altering the performance or cost of the vehicle.

Always make sure that you NEVER leave your logbook and retention certificate in your car, in case of theft.  This is because this paperwork proves your ownership of the private number plate.

Do Insurance Companies Charge for Change of Number Plate?

Insurance companies have different policies surrounding the cost of a change of number plate. Some insurance companies impose a fee for the service, however, most do not, and consider the service a "free administration fee", making it more convenient for policyholders.

It is worth noting, however, that there may be limitations to this.

Why is my Number Plate not Recognised on Insurance?

If your number plate cannot be recognized by your insurance provider, there are a couple of potential reasons why this may have occurred.

The Number Plate Has Not Been Registered Correctly

The first potential reason that your insurance company is unable to recognise the registration number is that the number plate has not been assigned or registered correctly.

Forgot to tell Insurance about private plate

If you fail to notify your car insurance provider about the change in your number plate, it can cause your number plate to not be recognised by your insurance provider.

To avoid this, you should always ensure to provide your insurance company with accurate and up-to-date information, to ensure they provide the correct coverage for your vehicle.

If you have changed your number plate and have not relayed this information to your insurance provider, then it can lead to your car being uninsured.

You can update your insurance policy with the new personalised plate in two ways:

  1. You can do it online. - By logging in online, you can change the details on your account.
  2. You can ring them. - If you are unable to make the change online due to any reason, then you can ring your insurance provider and inform them of the change.

By doing this, you will ensure that your vehicle remains insured under the new personalised number plate.

How do I add a nominee to a private number plate?

To add nominees to private number plates, there are certain steps and documents, which you will need to complete.

The steps may vary, depending on who is responsible for the private number plates in your area, however, below are some general steps on how to add a nominee:

  1. Obtain the required documentation. - You can obtain the required form from the issuing authority (e.g. the DVLA).
  2. Fill out the form. - The next step is to complete the form obtained in Step 1. To do this, you will require information about the nominee, such as their full name and contact details. To finish, the form will need to be signed by the grantee (i.e. the registered owner of the personalised number plate).
  3. Submit the Application. - Once your form has been finalised and signed, it will need to be submitted alongside any supporting documents, such as proof of identification. You should review the instructions carefully to ensure the correct supporting documents are provided.
  4. Processing and Approval. - After the application has been submitted, the issuing authority will review the information and documents provided and decide whether the nominee is eligible. The processing time can vary depending on the volume of applications at the present time.

Who do I need to inform when I change my number plate?

When you change your number plate, a number of people need to be informed, these are your insurance provider, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Taxation authority.

Thankfully, you only need to inform your insurance provider, and they will do the rest for you.
