Your dream number plate is now ready to be made. You will be asked what finishes are required prior to production. (this is an opportunity to add the GB or EURO logo, borders and flags) COMING TO THE WEBSITE SOMETIME IN 2023

 

Number plate rules and regulations

 

A number plate by law MUST BE visible both on the front and rear of your vehicle. The DVLA our extremely strict on what can and cannot be displayed. The rules are set in place to cover everything from the colour of the plate to the size of the numbers and letters featured. You will find that if you do not adhere to the rules penalties for displaying non-compliant plates are harsh and can result in receiving a hefty fine. In extreme cases it could result in the loss of your registration.

 

Here is a brief guide to what your acrylic plate should look like, this is not an option, these are the rules.

 

The number plates on your vehicle must:

 

* Be made of a reflective material.

* Display black characters on a white background (front plate)

* Display black letters on a yellow background (rear plate)

* Not have a background pattern.

 

The characters displayed on your plate may if you wish be produced in 3D.

 

Motorbike and motor tricycle number plates.

 

The law states that all bikes and trikes registered after September the 1st 2001, are required to display a number plate on the rear of the vehicle, for older models, if you wish to do so, you may display the plate on the front. The rules are the same for any transferring of private plates.

 

There are specific requirements required regards the size of the plate.

 

So what does the law say?

 

Here are the requirements for a number plate:

 

* The standard plate size is 229mmx178mm (There is no specific ruling on how big the plate must be)

* The characters on the plate must be 64mm tall and 44mm wide. ( with an exception to the number 1 and the letter I )

* The thickness of the letters must be 10mm and the space between the letters must be 10mm.

* The distance separating the two lines of text on the top and bottom must be 13mm.

* There also must be 11mm between the lettering and the edge of the characters must be 64mm tall.

* The space between the age identification and the other random letters must be 30mm.

* The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be at least 11mm.

* The vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 13mm.

* The colour of the rear plate will be a yellow background with black characters. The plate will feature no patterns and will be made of a reflective material. The text if you so wish can be displayed with a 3D effect.

* If you do purchase a private plate for your bike and then later down the line decide you would like to transfer it to another vehicle, you can apply to the DVLA to have the plate transferred. This can be any vehicle including a car.

Please note, if you are caught riding without the proper plates, the fine can be as much as £1,000. This could also result in having your private plate confiscated.

 

Buying a replacement number plate from Moonstone.

* If you need a replacement number plate or a further plate to attach to a caravan or trailer here a Moonstone we can help. There is however documentation required so that we can assist.

* You must provide proof of identity and also proof of registration plate entitlement.

* The documentation required would be as follows:

Proof of identity:

A driving License or Passport would be preferred.

 

Proof of Registration Plate Entitlement.

Two of the following documents would be required by Moonstone:

 

* A Vehicle Registration Certificate, this MUST be the red V5C form.

* The tear-off slip V5C/2 you will find this on the VS5 section 10.

* A certificate of entitlement the V750.

* If you purchased your plate from Moonstone you will have been given a retention certificate.

* A V11, License renewal.

* A V379, temporary Registration Certificate.

* A V948 this is an authorization certificate from the DVLA. If this is going to be provided for the proof, we must see a hard copy of the document. Digital, photocopied samples and copies sent by any digital device will not be accepted.

 

The “Retention Scheme”

 

It may take some time before you are in a position to purchase your dream plate, you may have a specific plate in mind that you would like to purchase, but it is not available (future re-leases) you maybe saving up funds to purchase your plate or maybe you simply don’t have a vehicle that can house your dream plate yet. The later has an option for you to purchase even without a vehicle. The retention scheme is in-place providing you with the opportunity to purchase your choice of private registration where you will be issued with a V778 Retention Certificate until your dream vehicle arrives.

 

The V778 Retention Certificate is valid for 10 years and will cost an additional £80 on top of all other costs. Please note if required an extension of a further 10 years can be granted if required.
